Behaviour does not come from the situation. Behaviour comes from your interpretation of the situation.
That distinction is everything.
Two founders hit the same setback. One thinks: "This is going wrong." The other thinks: "What do I do with this?" Same situation, completely different behaviour and therefore a completely different result.
Most people are not aware of their inner dialogue. They react automatically to tension, pressure and uncertainty. Without consciously choosing what a situation means.
"This will never work." "There is nothing I can do about this." "They will not get it anyway."
Every thought drives an emotion, every emotion drives behaviour and that behaviour creates the result.
Whoever does not lead their thinking gets led by their thinking. And whoever gets led by their thinking repeats the same patterns. Over and over. With the same result every time.
The manager who thinks "They do not listen anyway" stops communicating clearly and starts bending, softening, smoothing things over. The standard drops, the team delivers less and the manager feels confirmed in their belief. The circle repeats.
This is not bad luck. This is the direct consequence of unsteered thinking.
Taking accountability for your thinking means you admit that your interpretation is not reality. It is a story. And you can steer that story.
What do I have to do?
Stop reacting automatically. Start choosing consciously how you look at situations.
Concretely
Recognise your story. In every situation that creates tension, an automatic story appears. "This is unfair." "I cannot do this." "This is going wrong." Recognise that story for what it is: an interpretation, not a fact. Separate the facts from the story. Look at the facts and act from the facts.
Ask the right question. Not: "Why is this happening to me?" That question holds you in place. The right question is: "What do I make of this?" That question takes you to a choice. And choice is the core of leadership.
Choose your response consciously. Between the situation and your reaction there is space. That space is small. Most people miss it. A leader uses that space to choose on purpose. Not the automatic reaction, the deliberately chosen one.
Stop feeding what does not work. Thoughts that keep you small deserve no attention. No analysis, no nuance. Replace them with thoughts that lead to the behaviour you need. Not positive thinking, effective thinking.
Whoever steers the thought steers the result.
Your action for the next three days
Take three moments a day where you feel tension. Stop. Write down: what is the fact? What is my story about it? What behaviour do I choose? Do this for three days. By the end of the week you have a clear picture of your patterns and the choices you can make instead.
